What are Mini Implants?
If you cannot afford expensive dental implants, then mini implants may be an option for you. Mini dental implants are small diameter (1.8 millimeter), bio-compatible titanium alloy implant screws that have been used for a number of years now. Their diameter is about one-third that of standard dental fixtures, as you can see in the image to the right.
So what does this mean for you? Due to the much smaller diameter of mini implants, the surgery is much simpler and the healing time is faster. This also means they are much more affordable, about half the cost of standard dental implants.
Mini dental implants have been used to effectively stabilize denture plates in position. While they are not as sturdy as conventional full-sized dental implants, they have been shown to be reliable and long-lasting. They improve the ability of denture wearers to eat, smile, and speak with comfort and confidence.
What to Expect?
While placing a mini-implant is simpler than a full-sized fixture, it is still surgery. The jaw will need to be numbed. If you are anxious about the procedure you may want to have us prescribe you a sedative to take before the appointment.
The surgical appointment is relatively short, and the post-operative healing is relatively rapid.
Pros & Cons of Choosing Mini Implants
Here are some of the advantages of mini dental implants:
- There is no surgical flap required so the surgery to place the posts is much easier.
- They are less expensive, about half the cost of conventional dental implants.
- They have shorter healing times which means less swelling and risk for complications.
- They can prevent facial collapse just like standard implants.
Disadvantages of mini dental implants include:
- Since they are smaller, they are not as strong as standard-sized fixtures.
- They will stabilize the denture and improve chewing efficiency, but they won’t create the solid feel that full-sized fixtures will.
