I was only asking my dentist for nitrous

‘No nitrous for you.’ I don’t know how many times my dentist kept saying that to me. I was only asking for nitrous and not anything stronger because I needed 4 fillings. I know how nervous I get but my request was ignored. He says that his fillings are painless, so I don’t need nitrous. Really I could kick myself for going to the appointment anyway. Reflexively I kept grabbing the dentist’s hands anytime they came near me. They asked me to leave and I didn’t get the fillings. They told me to reschedule when I am up to it. I have had some time to think about it and I am seriously considering not going back there. I feel disrespected. Will other dentists refuse me if I ask for nitrous for fillings? Am I being unreasonable with my request? Thanks. Devon

Devon – Your request is not unreasonable. If you select a dentist who commonly sees fearful patients and offers various levels of sedation, you will get the dental treatment you need with an appropriate level of sedation for your case.

It is neither unusual, nor unreasonable, for anxious patients to request nitrous oxide for dental filling appointments. Sedation dentists understand that dental anxiety isn’t necessarily based on the type treatment you will receive. Many patients are anxious for all dental appointments, and they require some form of sedation.

You can consider getting recommendations from friends or acquaintances for dentists who offer sedation. Schedule appointments for consultations to meet a few dentists and discuss your concerns. When you are comfortable that your anxiety and your wishes will be respected, you can schedule an appointment for an exam and treatment.
