Is a Nesbit Partial Illegal In Oregon?

I lost an upper tooth. My dentist wants to replace it with a dental implant, but that has metal and I don’t want any metal in my mouth. I want a Nesbit partial denture, but my dentist insists it is illegal in our state because some people have swallowed them. I live in Oregon. I find it hard to believe these are illegal anywhere but I am willing to drive out of state to get them. Can you advise me where to go?

Dear Madilin,

Nesbit Partial

I don’t believe for a moment that a Nesbit Partial denture is illegal. My guess is that your dentist is afraid of being sued if you swallow it. While you are welcome to stay with any type of partial denture you want, I really do think you will be happier with a permanent solution.

If your only objection was there is metal in them, I have two things that should help set your mind at ease with that. First, the metal in a dental implant is titanium. It is biocompatible and has been used for years. Second, even if that does not make a difference, it is possible to get metal-free dental implants. These are made from zirconia. Not every dentist uses them yet because they are fairly new, but I am certain you will find someone who is willing to.
