Anything a kids’ dentist can do to help them stop sucking their thumb?

We saw our new family dentist for the first time. I think he says he is a family dentist to get more patients. Not kid friendly at all. He was really giving my 6 yr old the business about sucking her thumb. He told her if she is in first grade she has to stop sucking her thumb. No questions asked. Part of the reason that she sucks her thumb is stress. We have a lot going on in our house. So I understand. I am giving her a little more time before I really try to help her break the habit, but I am wondering if there is anything a kids’ dentist does to help them stop sucking their thumb? Thanks Kate

Kate – A dentist who specializes in working with children, and who loves having children as patients will be much more understanding. He or she will give you tips on how to help your daughter stop sucking her thumb.

You will also learn about oral appliances that are available. The oral appliances can prevent your daughter from sticking her thumb in her mouth to suck it, or make it very uncomfortable to do so. The appliances are worn long enough to help a child break the habit. When it’s removed, the desire to repeat the habit is gone. It will only take a few months to work.

At this point, before you find another dentist to help you, you may have to reassure your daughter of your understanding. You can also ask for a consultation with the dentist to ensure your daughter is comfortable at the new office and will have a pleasant experience.
