Can Lumineers Help My White Spots?

I had braces and they cost my mother a fortune. When the braces were done I had these weird white spots on my teeth. Some kids at school have been pointing it out to me, as if I don’t have a mirror at home and don’t feel weird enough already. I’m wondering if Lumineers can cover the white spots now that my teeth are straight. But, I also need to ask if they’re expensive. My mom doesn’t have a lot of money and I don’t want to stress her right after braces.

Dear Kaleigh,

Lumineers wafer being held up by a dental tool

It’s great that you’re researching this ahead of time trying not to stress out your mom. What you’re experiencing is kind of common. Those white spots after braces are usually decalcification spots.

People considering Lumineers aren’t looking to fix white spots. They’re looking for a total smile makeover. That’s not what you’re after, which is actually good for your mother, because they’re not an inexpensive treatment.

Instead, you may want to have her talk to your dentist about your white spots. It’s a shame he didn’t tackle this at your checkup. Decalcification can lead to decay, which isn’t what you’re going for. That’s not a good look.

Don’t let him try to talk you into teeth whitening. It won’t even out the color. It will whiten your teeth evenly so there will still be a difference in the way your teeth look.

Instead, there are treatments he can do. There’s a tooth mousse which should help with the spots and build up the enamel. There’s also a composite resin he can put over the decalcified spots. Your dentist can tell you more.

I hope this helps.
