Oral sedation at dentist with Halcion and Ativan

I’m getting all four wisdom teeth pulled and I’m a bit nervous. My dentist is giving me two pills called Halcion and Ativan, topped off with Nitrous Oxide.

I was wondering if any of you had any experience with either of those pills? How well do they work? Side effects? Anything else you all can think of would be great, I’d just like to calm my nerves some. Also, please don’t mention IV sedation, as that isn’t an option at my dentist.
Thanks Connie,

Dear Connie,

Halcion and Ativan are medications commonly used in dentistry for anxiety and  oral sedation. These drugs will you give a calming effect and make you feel very relaxed and drowsy, therefore do not drive on these medications and have someone assist you to your dental visit because even walking may become difficult for you. Given in a high dose these medications put you in a dreamy state of mind, therefore you will probably not even remember your wisdom teeth being taken out. The main side effects of these two drugs are drowsiness, dizziness, and slurred speech. Less common side effects are diarrhea, stomach cramps, blurred vision, vomiting, and nausea. If you have further questions or concerns talk with your dentist who will be able to answer any more questions you may have.
