Porcelain Veneers During Pregnancy

I didn’t realize I was pregnant when I had my porcelain veneers done. Now I”m worried I did something that would harm the baby. Do you know if getting porcelain veneers is dangerous during pregnancy?

Dear Nancy,

Congratulations on becoming a mother! When it comes to dental work during pregnancy, we are taught in dental school to schedule dental work for pregnant women during their second trimester. There are good reasons for that. In the final trimester, it won’t be very comfortable for you to lay back in a dental chair. In the first trimester, we are trying to avoid introducing any chemicals which can harm the baby.

Before you go into a panic, the only chemical used in a porcelain veneers procedure is the local anesthetic. Lidocaine is perfectly safe and used on pregnant women regularly, including during delivery. I feel confident your procedure didn’t harm your baby at all.

Caring for your porcelain veneers is important. Many women get ill during their first few months. In that case, I want you to make sure if you do vomit to rinse your mouth out with water before brushing your teeth. This will keep you from brushing the acidic nature of the vomit into your veneers.

Other than that, you should be fine.
