Serious Problem and Can’t Afford Dentist

I woke up today with my gum swollen and in massive pain. I haven’t been to the dentist in a while because of the cost. I’m pretty sure something serious is going on but don’t know how to afford the dentist. Is there some service for situations like this?

Dear Vera,

A woman holding her jaw in pain and in need of a gentle dentist

I’m not sure what you mean by service, but there are dentists who can help you. It sounds like you’re worried about having enough money. I will tell you most dentists went into the field because they care about people and want to help.

You are in a bind, but you also have a dental emergency. A swollen gum is often a sign of an infection. Dental infections are different than other types. You can’t just take medication and they’ll go away. You have to have a dentist physically remove the infection. They do this with a root canal treatment.

This is not something you want to put off because it will only get worse. If it spreads out of your jaw, which eventually it will, it could reach your heart or brain fairly quickly. Then, you’re not just talking about a dental problem. Your life could be at risk.

Finding an Affordable Dentist

You need a dentist who will be willing to work with you on payment. While many dentists expect full payment up front, affordable dentists are often willing to let you pay out your treatment. That is especially true in cases like yours. The key is, to be honest with them upfront about your financial situation.

In your place, I’d do an internet search for “affordable dentist”, then also check to see if they’re willing to see non-established patients in emergency situations. Talk to them about what’s going on with you.

I do understand what it’s like to not have money. However, I’m being completely honest with you when I say that regular dental care is cheaper than not getting it, both in the cost of your health and your finances. Paying for a root canal and crown are a lot more expensive than a cleaning.
