Problems with Numbing Medication

I have a high tolerance for the numbing medication which makes it not work for me at all. I do not have an allergy to the medication, it just does not work. This has landed me in some horrific dental procedures. This has caused me to avoid getting things done at times and now I am in a situation where I am going to need a root canal treatment (at the least). It’s possible I waited too long for the tooth to be saved. I’m considering going to the E.R. and having them do the work because they can knock me out. Before I spend a small fortune, is there another solution?

Dear Mae,

I have a much better solution for you than going to the E.R. Plus, they will not treat dental issues at a hospital. The most they will do is get you out of pain, temporarily, and tell you to see a dentist.

The good news is you will not need them. When someone has a high tolerance for the pain medication at the dentist generally means that you have some dental anxiety. The easiest way to deal with that is to see a sedation dentist.

With the experiences you have had, I recommend that you use oral conscious sedation. This is administered by a pill. It is very strong, though, so you will need someone to drive you to and from your dental appointment as well as stay with you until you are lucid and steady on your feet.
