Question for dentist on teething child

Our little daughter is crying day and night because she has new teeth erupting. My husband works nights so I need some ways to calm her so that he can sleep. What do you suggest? Thanks Lori

Lori – When a child is teething, in addition to crying, there are some things to expect including swollen gums, disruption in her normal sleep pattern, drooling, a decreased appetite, biting or gnawing on object, rubbing her ears, and general irritability. How much your child is affected depends on her discomfort.

There are some things that may comfort your daughter include chilled teething rings or using a clean finger to massage her gums. If she seems to be in a lot of pain, ask your pharmacist about a low dose of over-the-counter medicine that may help.

If the discomfort continues, it may be time to schedule an appointment with your family dentist or with a pediatric dentist to examine your daughter’s gums and erupting teeth.
