Why does my tooth hurt when I drink cold water?

For the past 2 weeks whenever I drink cold water, my tooth hurts. It has gotten worse. If I can find out what is causing it without going to the dentist – which I hate – I will be happy. What could be causing the pain? Thanks Matias

Matias – When a tooth is sensitive to hot or cold foods or drinks and the pain does not linger, it may be caused by decay, a loose filling, or exposure of some of the tooth root surface, which can occur when gums recede.

You can try using toothpaste for sensitive teeth, such as Sensodyne®. Avoid aggressively brushing your teeth. If the sensitivity continues, schedule an appointment with a gentle dentist. Be frank about your anxiety. A gentle dentist understands the concerns of anxious patients and will work hard to make you comfortable and relaxed, and give you a pain-free experience.

If you are having lingering pain after drinking cold water, the pulp in your tooth is probably inflamed from decay. In this case, see a dentist right away to prevent an infection from spreading and causing increased sensitivity or pain.
