What can I use to whiten my yellow veneers?

My veneers are getting yellow. Whitening toothpaste is not working. I just started using the strips on them but so far it doesn’t seem to help. What should I use to whiten them that will really work? – Alyssa

Alyssa,

Do you have composite veneers or porcelain veneers? In either case you won’t be able to whiten the veneers yourself, but a dentist can help.

If you have composite veneers that are yellow, depending on how old they are, a cosmetic dentist may be able to restore them by polishing them to remove stains. But as composite veneers age, they stain and eventually need to be replaced.

Porcelain veneers are stain resistant. They can last 15 years or more, if you take care of them and receive regular exams and checkups from a cosmetic dentist. Porcelain veneers must be cleaned by a hygienist who is specifically trained to take care of them, otherwise the surface can be damaged and attract stains. The only way to change the color of porcelain veneers is to have them removed and replaced.

Whitening strips and bleaching gels are effective only on natural teeth.
