Whitening Dental Bonding

I have two front teeth that I had dental bonding done on almost fifteen years ago in order to repair a chipped tooth. They are starting to show their age and need to be whitened. This goes for both the teeth and the dental bonding. Is there a way one type of whitening works for both the tooth and the repair or will I need two different types of teeth whitening?

Dear Carol,

There is not a teeth whitening method that works on dental bonding. When they start to age, the only way to get them back the way they were is to replace them. However, that doesn’t mean you don’t have options.

Your first possibility is to use professional teeth whitening on your natural teeth in order to get them to the color you want. After that, you can replace the dental bonding to match your new updated tooth color. You should be aware, that in many cases dental bonding does not last as long as yours did this last time. I’m super impressed with how well you must have maintained them. If you’re looking for something that will be more permanent and not need to be changed as often, then I would look at your second option.

Another possibility is for you to get porcelain veneers. You can get a complete smile makeover to cover all your visible teeth when you smile, or you can just get two veneers for the chipped teeth. However, if you only do two veneers you will want to whiten the remainder of your teeth first, the way I suggested for the bonding so your teeth will all be uniform in color.
