Zoom Whitening for White Spots?

My daughter recently had her braces off. When they came off she had white spots on her teeth. We talked to our dentist about it and she suggested Zoom Whitening. We went ahead and did that, but it didn’t help with the white spots. Should we have done something else or did the Zoom Whitening get done incorrectly?

Dear Penny,

I’m a bit surprised your dentist suggested Zoom Whitening for this. While teeth whitening is good for just that. It doesn’t work on uneven color. In fact, it is only likely to make it worse. When white spots are on teeth after braces, it usually means there is some decalcification. It is challenging for children to get their teeth adequately cleaned with all that metal in their mouths.

If that is what has caused the white spots, I’d suggest you try tooth mousse. It is designed specifically for this situation and is meant to remineralize teeth. That would be my first try.

If that doesn’t work, my next recommendation would be dental bonding. However, not all dentists will know how to do this. The softened enamel needs to be removed and then replaced with the dental bonding.
