Anxiolysis or what is known as sleep dentistry is an excellent option to help patients that suffer from dental anxiety. Generally, it refers to oral sedation which simply involves taking a pill prior to your dental appointment.
Unfortunately, it is all too common for patients to put off their dental treatment due to fear. Dr. Collins is specially trained in sleep dentistry techniques and can help you manage your dental anxiety.
What to Expect
To begin, Dr. Collins will issue you a prescription for triazolam or valium. When taken before your appointment, this medication will make you feel sleepy and relaxed. Some of our patients have shared that they didn’t remember anything about the actual dental procedure. The duration of the effects typically last for two to four hours. You will need to arrange a ride home from the dentist because you will not be able to drive afterward.
Anxiolysis is completely safe. This method refers to conscious sedation which means that you will not be unconscious at any time during the treatment. Your protective reflexes, like breathing and coughing, are still fully functional. But to play it safe, Dr. Collins and his professionally-trained staff will closely monitor your vital signs throughout the entire dental appointment.
