Deep Cleaning Keeping Me From the Dentist

I didn’t really have problems with my teeth until I had my first deep cleaning done. I have deep gaps pockets that will not heal. It was excruciating having the deep cleaning done and my teeth have been super sensitive ever since. I don’t know what to do because just the idea of going back to the dentist makes me want to throw up.

Dear Christie,

Woman in pain grabbing her jaw

It sounds like you have advanced periodontal disease. I’m not sure what went wrong at your appointment because it should have been done with a local anesthetic so that you cannot feel anything. The gums are usually infected and inflamed. As a result, the cleaning has to be done all the way down to the attachment of the tooth to the gums. This is painful and why it is done under anesthetic so you don’t experience that pain. Continuing this treatment is necessary. In fact, I’d go so far as to call it a dental emergency. If this is not addressed soon, you can actually lose your teeth.

If your dentist did not use a local anesthetic then I would switch dentists quickly. If he did and it still did not work, it’s possible that you have dental anxiety. That will impact the effectiveness of the local anesthetic so that wears off too quickly. I recommend you see either a dentist or gum specialist that offers dental sedation to have this done. You do not want to put this off.

I would also request a course of antibiotics for the course of your gum treatments. This will help with any post-operative pain.
