Is this dentist really affordable or am I paying for the amenities?

I found an affordable dentist online. When I had my first appointment I was surprised that the office is so swank. I am beginning to wonder if this is going to turn out to be a rip off. How can a dentist afford all of these amenities and still be affordable? Are there fees that a dentist can hide in the billing process that I should look out for? Or how will I know whether or not he is using cheap materials to make my costs lower? – Cecelia

Cecelia,

Dental visits can be intimidating for many patients. Many dentists choose to spend some of their profits on marketing, amenities, and other ways to make dental visits comfortable or spa like. A comfortable environment helps dentists retain patients. It doesn’t necessarily mean that a dentist has questionable practices or that his or services are not really affordable. Patients appreciate the efforts made to help them feel welcome and relaxed.

If you find that you are receiving good dental care at affordable rates, the dentist’s claim to be affordable is valid. If care is affordable, but inferior, that is a cause for even greater concern. Low prices and cheap materials will cost you more money in the long term.

Compare rates for services between several dentists in your area. Ensure that you have a complete list of services that are included in the cost so that you can make a fair comparison.

If you have questions about how much you’ve been charged for certain services, in addition to asking your dentist, you can ask your insurance company. The insurance company will let you know if rates are reasonable and customary for your area. The explanation of benefits form from your dental insurance company will also indicate if your dentist’s rates are reasonable or above average.

Remember that you always have the option to seek a second opinion or switch to another dentist if you have valid reasons for suspicion.
