Trying to keep silver mercury fillings out of my kids’ teeth

I told my kids’ pediatric dentist that I don’t want mercury fillings in their teeth and she looked at me like I had grown a 3rd eye. If so many adults including me don’t want mercury fillings, why would I let my kids have them? She mumbled something about the teeth being baby teeth so they will fall out anyway. She might not care but I do. I don’t like controversy but mercury in the kids’ teeth is not about to happen. So what should I do now? Elle

Elle – Your concern is understandable. You can ask your children’s dentist if she places white composite fillings. If she has been trained to place white fillings, and if she has experience doing so, you can request that only composite fillings be used for your children. Hopefully your request will be readily accepted.

If necessary, you can transfer your children’s care to another dentist. If your own dentist accepts children as patients, ask your dentist if he or she is willing to place composite fillings in your children’s teeth. There are family dentists who only use white fillings. You can be confident that you can find the care you want for your children.
