My Crown Feels Weird

I don’t like going to the dentist. Because I avoided it, I ended up having to get a root canal treatment and a dental crown. It’s felt weird from the beginning, but my dentist said that is just because I’m not used to the new crown. I decided to give it a few weeks, but it still feels weird. What do I do? Bear in mind I am not keen on dental work.

Dear Perry,

I’m sorry you are dealing with this, especially when you garnered up enough courage to go to the dentist in the first place. I think you need to get a second opinion on this dentist. When a crown is done correctly, the patient won’t feel it at all, that includes when they chew. There is something wrong either with the crown or your tooth. As your dentist isn’t willing to do anything about it you will be better served with a different dentist.

I read a post by a dentist with an experience similar to yours. Even dentists have to get their work done. A dentist had a crown that felt weird and ended up switching to a different dentist. When he asked them to do a periapical x-ray, it turned out the tooth underneath had pretty extensive decay. I don’t think this is your problem because the root canal treatment and dental crown are fairly new. However, at the very least it needs to be adjusted.

Because of your dental anxiety, I am going to suggest you see a sedation dentist. This will allow you to get any dental work done without the anxiety you normally feel. If you just need something mild to relax you, then you could try some nitrous oxide. If you need a more extensive procedure then I would suggest you have oral conscious done.
