Went Directly to the Dental Lab for My Partial Denture

About nine years ago I had a partial denture made through my dentist. The lab that made it did a fantastic job. So, when it was time to get my new one made, I decided to go directly to them. The weird thing is, it hasn’t turned out nearly as well. I’ve had countless problems with it not fitting right. The lastest of which is it is rocking back and forth when I chew. After the last visit (around time number 7) he asked me to stop coming back and be happy with what I have. I asked for a refund and he refused. Am I just stuck with this?

Dear Mark,

This is an interesting scenario. The rocking is likely from a poorly made framework. This will happen if they made a distorted impression. I’m not too surprised that happened. It is the dentists who are trained to create the impressions. It takes some skill.

I am also surprised the lab did your removable partial. I’m not sure if you are aware of this but it is illegal for the lab to do this without the involvement of the dentist. This is to protect you. As you have discovered, they are not qualified to do the job that needs to be done.

I think the quickest way to deal with this is to get your refund. I am aware he told you no, but I have a suggestion that may sound a tad mean. Go back and tell them that if they do not refund your money, that you will go to the dental board and testify against them. Yes, you were the one that asked them to do the procedure, but they are the ones who know the dental laws better. They bear the greatest responsibility in this.

I have a strong feeling you will get your money back. Once you do. Go to your dentist to get your partial denture made correctly and safely. He has that degree for a reason.

You may also want to consider getting a dental implant, which is more permanent. However, this is a very advanced procedure. Don’t try to cut corners or you could end up with some serious problems.
