What’s the minimum age for dental implants?

What’s the minimum age for dental implants? I have a 16-year old that was in a bike accident that caused him to lose 2 teeth. His dentist recommended a flipper but I really prefer dental implants because they will last much longer. The dentist doesn’t recommend implants because he said it can interfere with my son’s other teeth which may be still growing. Is this an accurate response or should I take my son elsewhere for implants? How old do you have to be for dental implants? Sasha

Sasha – Although there is no definite age for dental implants, they are best placed when jawbone growth is complete. Usually, a 16-year-old teenager has not fully developed.

Why Dental Implants Should Be Placed in Fully Developed Bone

There are several reasons that it’s wise to wait to place dental implants to replace missing teeth.

  • As the jawbone continues to grow and develop, teeth move, but dental implants don’t.
  • The implant can interfere with jawbone growth.
  • Nearby teeth might shift or settle in the wrong position.

What Are Your Options?

Although you might be hesitant about certain types of tooth replacement for your son, you’ll get the best results with an experienced cosmetic dentist.

  • Partial denture – A cosmetic dentist can make a partial denture that closely matches the color and characteristics of your son’s natural teeth.
  • Dental bridge – It can provide a natural-looking solution, but the teeth on either side of the missing one need to be shaved down to accommodate the bridge. Permanent teeth that are shaved down will always need to be protected by a crown.

We suggest that you schedule consultations with at least two cosmetic dentists. Your son will receive an examination, and the options will be explained to you. Think about the short- and long-term effects of any treatment you choose for your son. Weigh them carefully.
