Dentures keep lifting when I eat

I am on my 3rd set of dentures, top and bottom. I received this set in June 2016 because the old ones were worn and they didn’t feel well or look good.

Within the past 2 months, the bottom denture lifts whenever I eat something that requires much chewing. There have been several times when they have just fallen out. This is an ongoing discussion with my dentist so in just the past 2 months they have been relined 3 times. This dentist is at one of those big centers where you can get your dentures in a day or two.

The good thing is that I don’t have any complaints about the customer service. They are willing to get me an appointment quickly. But the dentures are just too loose. Is there anything I can suggest to them to help them finally make the right correction? Thanks. Nick

Nick – If you’ve worn dentures for years, the loose fit is likely a result of jawbone shrinkage. When all of your natural teeth are missing, jawbone shrinkage is unavoidable. Dentures that rest on the bone ridge will accelerate shrinking. Loose dentures can cause a lot of embarrassing moments. When they don’t fit well, they can easily:

  • Fall out
  • Lift
  • Slip

What to Do When Your Dentures Lift

If you have excessive jawbone shrinkage, relining the dentures isn’t the answer. At this point, the best long-term solution is to stabilize your dentures with dental implants. As few as two implants are needed to secure them, but if your budget permits it, receive at least four implants to improve stability.

We recommend that you schedule appointments with at least two implant dentists. Your dentures will be examined to see if they can be adapted to accommodate dental implants. If not, you will need new dentures, and the base will be made to support implants.

In addition to preventing your dentures from slipping again, implants will help you speak, eat, and smile with confidence.
