Tooth Left Uncapped Following a Root Canal

Last year I got a root canal and never got a crown put on. So it’s the filling and a post in my tooth. I’ve recently started feeling pain while biting down (the tooth next to it also needed a root canal, but that’s a lot of money I don’t have) when I looked at the filling it seems there’s a darker spot in the center, so I figured it wore down to the post? Will it have to be redone? Or can I just get a crown put on it? My dentist never really explained anything.

Thanks, Terry

Dear Terry,

Terry you may be experiencing pain from either your tooth you had the root canal treatment on or from the tooth that is next to your root canaled tooth. When one does not put a dental crown on a tooth that had a root canal you can develop leakage around the seal protecting the canals which can cause the tooth to become decayed or even reinfected which would require retreating the root canal. Since you are feeling pain while chewing it sounds like you have an infected tooth which would require antibiotics to clear up the infection. We recommend you see your dentist as soon as possible to see what is going on with your teeth. It’s unhealthy for your teeth as well as your body to not treat an infection from a tooth.
